Daily Apps points to a method which will let you install Leopard just like you install Windows or Linux. Just download the Leopard ISO, burn it to a DVD and you are ready to install Leopard. No patching, hacking involved.
How does this work ?
The latest Leopard ISO image comes with PC-EFI built in. This allows normal BIOS based PC’s to boot off the Leopard DVD. You can find more about PC-EFI from the OSX86 wiki.
Ironically, Microsoft Windows support BIOS only, and Apple makes Boot camp to fill the gap. The EFI patch works in a similar approach: it emulates EFI data for normal BIOS-based PCs and let OS X treat them as genuine EFI-based Macs.
The EFI emulation is a long dream in OSX86 community, but prior to this, thanks the Apple’s open source Darwin Project and those Hackintosh gurus, we can still enjoy OS X on normal PCs, with patched kernels/kernel modules which just bypass EFI. Now with the EFI patch, the hackintosh can boot off “vanilla” (unmodified) OS X kernel and use vanilla kexts, which gives a more clean room and great peace of mind for future system updates.
How to Install Leopard on vanilla PC’s
- First get the EFI patched ISO from some torrent site like Mininova. You can find it by performing a search for iATKOS v1.0i.
- Then burn the ISO to the DVD.
- Boot from the DVD, select what you want to install and proceed.
That’s it. You have got a fully functional Mac OS X Leopard on your PC.
P.S. - I am yet to try this method. So I cannot tell whether the Leopard installation plays nice with existing Windows and Linux installs.

You seem to be interested in other OSes than the one which you bought and prolly would have paid some Rs 4-5k.
Let me tell you this. Mac OS X is built for Apple Computers. It might run on non Apple Hardware but the experience wouldn’t be smooth. Plus it’s no fun with Leopard on most of the ugly designed computers.
Hehe… Mac fanboy strikes again.
I did not bring the OS. I bought the lappy and sadly paid for the O.S. too just because there was no other option with me. The Ubuntu laptops were just not good enough.
And about the OS X experience on non-Apple hardware, Lifehacker says this.
That benchmark! That is supposed to be a joke. He compared 3 systems with different system configuration and 2 of it was old PCs.
May be the configs are different. But it gives a pretty good idea that Leopard runs fine on a non-Apple hardware config as well.
Manas,
Don’t argue with mac fanatics, there’s really no point. I use Vista, Mac and Ubuntu, and in the end it’s more important to use the best tool for the job. Apple fanboys seem to take offense to any suggestion that Apple may not be the one and only solution.
That being said I do have a quick question, did you install this on the Vostro 1400 your previously written about? I have the same notebook and tried other non-EFI editions and it hung. Just wondering if it’s worth trying the iATKOS edition.
Thanks
Hi Mark…
I will try to install this thing on the laptop once I get the time. Will mail you when I do that.
mark, manas: did you get the sound to work on 1400 vostro? apparently sigmatel 9228 is the hangup.
OMG it worked but its a little slow but it works fin on my old eight year old computer that i didnt care is it got screwed up and it worked thanks man!
Mac OS X on an eight year old PC ! Cool..
My vostro 1400 mostly works with both iAtkos and Kalyway about the same so far i think. don’t want to post that many details here.
~Works
Airport
geforce 8400gs
Sound through headphone jack only (sigmatel 9228)
Webcam without microphone
~Does not work
Sound through internal speakers
Microphone
Ethernet
Bluetooth
Sleep
So as i said quite nice.
If I left things out its because I haven’t tested it yet (ie time machine)
ok i just read above comment about sound
apple hda patcher v1.16 (i think it must be this version not newer)
9228 code dump
search insanely mac to get them
and video..
download the 10.5.2 kexts from i think netkas’s site
by the way i used the vanilla kernal and i just realized
SLEEP WORKS!!!!

Ladies & Gentlemen

To Ream:
You need to customize the install and select the other bootloader, i believe it is the mbr one you need to select.
To Mentch,
How do you customize and select the other bootloader. I cant see how i could change to the mbr????
Thanks
Ben
Hi there, I’m also trying to get iATKOS 1.0 on my HP dv1240. Seems to have installed OK and successfully boots! But, it gets stuck during the initial setup — after selecting the default language and keymapping — about 3 steps in, the cool music stops and the whole initial setup starts over. Can’t get past that. I’m suspecting a driver conflict — I selected ALL of them — but no real idea. Any suggestions?
Well, I’ve finally got the iATKOS running on my hp pavillion 9500, but it seems very slow with the video. For example, the ‘welcome’ video is plays at the intro only displays one or two frames a second. I dont see why the video would be messed up since my system actually has the same video components as a macbook pro — namely the integrated intel gma 3100. is this normal? thanks.
Hey,
I have been reading a lot of this and it sounds pretty cool. So I have decided to run osx. However, since I am running vista, I can not partition my hard drive anymore (due to an earlier selection when I first installed it :S). Anyhow, I wish to know if one can run leopard from an external hard drive? If so, how to do so since I am using an hp dv6000 laptop!?!
Hey John, it definitely is very cool. I would say check out the thread on the osx86 project (google it) there is one specifically for the hp dv6000. also you can shrink your vista partition if you boot via a cd/dvd/usb and an app like partition magic. best of luck!
I’m a college student and im not well versed in hacking or code, but would it be possible for me to put mac on my hp dv6000 with my layman status in computers? If someone thinks it would be possible, could you direct me to some instructions?
Also, if the answer is no, would a mac G4 with 450mhz and 768ram for $200 be a good purchase as opposed to risking the wellbeing of my hp?
thanks very much
Help me everybody!
I installed iatkos first and the kalyway in a hp dv1000 both of them give me the same trouble, after a succesfull install I restart de laptop and after som seconds of the background gray and the apple it restart once and on and on.
yellow everyone,
well im on linux, mandriva to be more precise, i installed it on a acer lappy and id like to try out the mac… so if i install the iatkos, would it work?
secondly, i saw further up that someone was saying that ethernet did not function…does that mean no wireless connection is able to be made?? or is it a configuration pb..

* Ricoh 5-in-1 Card Reader (Not working)
* Headphone and Line-out Jacks (Work)
* Conexant Modem (Not Working)
* Firewire 400 (Work)
Sleep is working with Sleepkernel.
I installed:
Aperture, with about 40.000 photos
Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Prenium with Fireworks CS3
Firefox 3
Filezilla
Toast 9 Titanium
A lot of utilities
The laptop is operating the mos in a Business domain local network
All the sytem runs VERY SMOOTH.
You can see early screenshots in the following picasa gallery:
http://picasaweb.google.gr/SotirisPandis/OSx86Screenshots#
My only problem is the faulty WIFI. Im planning to install a Dell wifi card that works perfect.
The original OS was Vista Home and the notebook was VERY - VERY slow. I couldn’t work properly (Internet stuff, light web development, office docs, light raw image development, media center laptop).
With Leopard all the above are running quite smooth and the notebook is operate able.
