[How To] Install Custom Recovery on LG Optimus One P500

So now that you are done with rooting on your LG Optimus One P500, the next step before installing a custom ROM is to install a custom recovery on your phone.

Custom Recovery is the most important step in the process of installing a custom ROM and it is imperative that you follow the instructions carefully. Once custom recovery is successfully installed, you can flash new ROM’s, backup your current ROM and do much more. In short, once your done with custom recovery it is a 99.9999% assurance that you will never brick your phone. :)

Update 02-Sep-2011

The earlier method was obsolete.

ClockworkMod recovery is the best recovery available for Optimus One now and can be easily installed through ROM Manager. Follow the below steps to install ClockworkMod recovery:

  1. Install ‘ROM Manager‘ from Market.
  2. Open ‘ROM Manager’ and click on ‘Flash ClockworkMod Recovery’.
  3. It will ask you to confirm the phone. Make sure it says ‘LG Optimus One’.
  4. Confirm the ‘Superuser’ prompt to give root access to ROM Manager.
  5. ROM Manager will install the CWM recovery and show you the success message.
Select ‘Reboot into Recovery’ to go into CWM recovery.
In custom recovery, you can use the menu key to select ‘Reboot’ for rebooting your Android phone back into the OS.

That is it. You have got custom recovery on your phone now and are ready to install custom ROM’s. I will show how to do that in the next post.

  1. why is typing
    sh /sdcard/rf.sh
in the emulator different to all other posts ive seen on other sites they seem to be typing a lot more

  2. The sh file contains all the commands that needed to be typed previously. Just open the sh file and check, you will find all the commands there.

The sh thing just makes things simple.

  3. so (sh /sdcard/rf.sh) is all i have to type in to get custom recovery installed , then i can install a custom rom
brilliant a guide that makes sense

  18. Did anyone else get a message like “It’s recommended that you have wifi access” when they chose “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery” or was it only me?

Anyway I went and said “Ok” to that and nothing has happened since then. It’s been over 45 mins now and a little circle keeps rotating at the top right hand corner of the screen to show that something is being processed.

Does this require an active connection? Would it be safe to terminate this action while this app is showing it’s busy? I mean it has been 45 mins you know

  19. yah u need an internet connection or wifi to download recovery and every one gets that pop up…it takes 20 min on slow network.I think its about 4mb of size.

  23. I got through steps 1-5 ok but when I “Select ‘Reboot into Recovery’ to go into CWM recovery” all it did was it rebooted with a factory reset. The Recovery never loaded. Any idea what’s going on here and how I can fix it?

  24. Thanks shafath. The instructions for flashing CWR using LGMDP from your link works well and it solved the CWR booting problem (factory reset instead of CWR) on my Optimus One. Now I can boot to CWR using ROM Manager and try out new ROMs :)

  25. Step 1-5 worked fine. When I did ‘Reboot to Recovery’ to go into CWM Recovery, it rebooted with factory reset. Didn’t go into recovery menu. How to fix this? Please help.

  26. K twice have I followed these instructions (two different sites) and each time it just factory resets. nothing else happens and I’m sick of it lol my sole mission is to install gingerbread and I’m a failure, thanks for any help or effort given.
