Internet Explorer 8 frequently prevents me from visiting certain websites that want to use some add-ons to display the content. The error message will be

Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer

A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this webpage.
What you can do:
Go to your home page

IE SettingsI have checked all the add-ons installed and I could not find any malicious addon listed there. Did a simple search on Google, the solution is quite simple. It seems Microsoft decided to add some extra security to Internet Explorer 8 by guessing which websites are insecure. :D

Open Internet Explorer 8 –> Tools –> Internet Options –> Advanced.

Uncheck the option ‘Enable Memory Protection to help mitigate online attacks’. This can be found under Security section.

Firefox 64 bit nightly build now available for Windows

without comments

Firefox 64 bit about screen

For those using 64 bit version of Windows 7, Mozilla has some good news. Mozilla has started offering 64 bit builds of Firefox nightlies for Windows as well.

But since not all plugins like Java and Flash are available in 64 bit versions, you need to run 32 bit versions of the plugins. You can grab the 64 bit builds for the Firefox trunk here.

After installing the Firefox 64 bit build more than likely you will see a missing DLL (MSVCR100.dll) error while starting Firefox.

This can be fixed by installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package from Microsoft. Once that is done, just look at your about screen of Firefox Win 64 bit build. :)

Install KTorrent 4.0 in Ubuntu / Kubuntu Lucid

with 7 comments

KTorrent 4.0 was released couple of days back after being in development for close to 5 months. It adds many new features, the big ones being magnet support and support for µTP protocol (bittorrent over UDP) along with many bug fixes.

Users of Kubuntu / Ubuntu Lucid will not be getting the new version automatically but as always you can install the new version from a Launchpad PPA. :)

Note – Before proceeding ensure that you have added the Kubuntu Updates PPA. You can add the PPA by using:

apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa

Open Konsole and type the following commands in sequence:

  • apt-add-repository ppa:blca/published
  • aptitude update
  • aptitude full-upgrade

You should see KTorrent 4.0 in the updates list. Enjoy the new version.
